Savar Correspondent: The Dhaka-Aricha highway is constantly experiencing severe traffic jams due to the uncontrolled movement of battery-powered rickshaws. The road is disrupting passenger and vehicular movement, especially during office hours and opening hours of educational institutions, the traffic situation is becoming unbearable.
Battery-powered rickshaws were originally meant for plying inner-city roads, but are now plying freely on highways. These rickshaws stop everywhere to pick up and drop off passengers, making it difficult to maintain order on the roads. As a result, traffic slows down and sometimes the road is completely blocked.
Local residents and passers-by said that many people are late to work every day due to this problem. Besides, emergency services like ambulance and fire service vehicles are also hampered due to traffic congestion, which is seriously affecting the process of saving lives.
A passer-by said, "The rickshaws stop and pick up passengers every now and then, and because of this, the entire road is jammed. If this problem is not resolved quickly, the situation may worsen."
Experts say urgent steps are needed to bring battery-powered rickshaws under control on important roads like highways. They suggested that specific lanes should be created for rickshaws or traffic laws should be enforced more strictly on roads.
The local administration has assured that effective measures will be taken to solve the problem quickly and strict steps will be taken to restore order in the movement of battery operated rickshaws.
